Killer Freelance Opportunity

Are you looking for a fantastic freelancing gig? Occasionally, you may stumble upon an opportunity that seems too good to be true - and it usually is. Other times, you may find what looks like a good solid project lead and it turns out to be nothing like you thought. That's exactly what happened to a few folks responding to a freelance listing on the website, Craigslist.org last week. The ad, posted under the title "Freelance" was pretty vague but after a few email exchanges with the poster the gig became all too clear - murder for hire.

According to FBI agents, Ann Marie Linscott used the website to try and hire a contract killer to get rid of someone's wife. Freelancers responding to the ad (thinking it was a more typical type of freelance gig) turned the woman over to police and she was eventually arrested.

Ok, this doesn't instill a lot of confidence in searching for freelance work online. Yet, there are thousands of great jobs out there, you just have to know how to find legitimate freelance opportunities and how to be smart when replying to ads that seem too good to be true.

Have you ever had a bad experience with a freelance job you found via the Internet? Let us know! Send your freelance horror stories to consulting.guide@about.com and we'll publish the best (or worst!) one. Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
