Consulting with Federal Dollars

Thursday May 8, 2008
The government can offer plenty of project opportunities for a wide range of consultants. While there are some specific preliminary steps involved when pursuing federally-funded projects, it can be a steady source of business once you have that first job under your belt, so to speak. This article, "SBAM Launches Biz Consulting Pilot" . from a Michigan tech journal reminded me of the diversity of consulting projects backed by Federal dollars. In this case, a year-long pilot program sponsored by the Small Business Association of Michigan is providing market research conducted by consultants to small businesses in the Michigan area in an effort to help them grow business.

The project is funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Business Enterprise Grant program. While the program is "www.fedbizopps.gov"> FedBizOpps.gov. Even if you aren't ready to compete for Federal dollars, working pro bono . for small business organizations set up or backed by the SBA (such as Women's Business Centers or Small Business Development Centers) is a good way to get your foot in the door.
